Frequently asked questions
What is an IP address?
An IP address is a unique number that identifies your device on the internet. Every request you send to a website carries it so the response can find its way back. Your public IP is assigned by your internet provider and differs from the local address inside your home network (for example 192.168.x.x).
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 is the older format with four numbers (for example 109.199.123.187) and its addresses are running out. IPv6 is the newer standard with much longer hexadecimal addresses. Most connections still use IPv4 while more and more providers add IPv6. This page checks both.
Why is the location not accurate?
Location comes from a database that maps IP ranges to the place where the provider registered them. It often shows the regional city or even a different one. It is not GPS and cannot reveal a street or address.
Can websites see my IP address?
Yes. Every website you open sees your public IP address, otherwise it could not reply to you. Most sites store it in their logs. We do not: we show it to you and forget it.
How can I hide my IP address?
The most common way is a VPN service or a proxy server, so websites see the VPN server's address instead. The Tor browser hides it as well. Keep in mind the VPN provider itself can see your traffic, so choose a trusted one.
Is it dangerous if someone knows my IP?
On its own an IP address does not give access to your device and does not reveal where you live. It shows an approximate area and your provider. The only risk is poorly secured devices or routers with open ports. Keep software updated and use a firewall.
Does my IP address change?
Most home and mobile subscriptions use dynamic addresses that may change when you restart the router or after a few days. A static address is usually requested separately from your provider.
How do I check my IP from a terminal?
Run curl myip.bg/text to get just the address. curl myip.bg/json returns the full details as JSON.
